great tips - i have to dis-agree on the "gay rights" things too - I have a GAY twitter account and this is my topic, so you should at least add that for those "sensitive" topics or not it is OK to tweet about them when you are in that niche and your followers are focused on that topic

Did you write any of those with me in mind? ha ha. Great insight into connecting and interacting with others. I often find that people are more interested in their number (friend collecting) than fostering meaningful and useful relationships. Your tips are great to avoid the Twitter/Facebook feux pauxs.

Yes, more than 10 000 followers jump a year after reading your post. I must say that your post helped me. I followed most of your tips except the follow back one. I try to keep bragging at a minimum, stay away from too much banality and avoid being constantly negative. That's it. Appart from that I guess it's word of mouth.

I don't agree with the "follow me because I follow you" sort of thing because spammers like to leech onto your profile based on keywords. Such as in the case I tweeted about an adorable baby video, got a follower that was only about the buying and selling of baby clothing. It has nothing to do with my common interests and following people just to have spam on my timeline isn't something I'm wiling to try just to gain a following.

This is a helpful post, thanks! I think I may be guilty mostly of #8 but will think about the rest as I tweet in the next few days.

Without running afoul of #11, I think @nikkipilkington might want to reflect some more on #6 and #10.

As regards #6, I do follow everybody who follows me, and it's great. I have created a list of people @kabissa/interesting that I follow every day so I don't get lost, and all the people who follow me can also send me DMs which I really appreciate. It's only fair.

The only issue I have is with spammers who quickly unfollow, and I have to prune my followee list regularly. @Twunfollow is a good help with that.

Hmm I'm not convinced that the 'you should follow me on Twitter because I follow you' argument is a good one - I know some people swear by it but I'm not one of them... I follow people because I'm interested in them, and if I followed all 11k who follow me I'd pretty soon have a very unmanageable Twitter stream...
