I am currently going to school and eventually plan to get my MBA with a Specialization in Mobile Marketing and Social Media. Let me tell you, it is very hard work. Keeping up with all of the new trends is a headache all on its own. Yes, the money can be good but not with the number of hours you put into it.

Re: 12 Things That Suck About Social Media Consulting

I completely agree with your entire article. Social Media is a bear of an industry. I am the social media director for a small retail business specializing in supplemental heating, and home decor. It is a brutal job. Trying to keep up with what people are responding to is a difficult job. Acquiring fans proved to be a much more difficult task then I had originally thought.
It is a rewarding job when things are going well, but when the fan number stops climbing and the "Like's" and comments come to a hault it is difficult to begin building it again. When you think you have mastered it something changes and you have to learn all new techniques and trends and it is difficult.

Re: 12 Things That Suck About Social Media Consulting

Great post! It is important to have articles like this that build awareness about both sides of the coin that is social media marketing. It's not necessarily a bad thing, instead it helps your decide if SMC is right for you!

Re: 12 Things That Suck About Social Media Consulting

I am a social media consultant. Social media consulting isn't all daisies! It's hard constant work and old school marketers STILL knock on it. If you plan on being a social media guru, plan to read alot, make meaningful (arduous) relationships online and work harder and longer than most people do--the positive? If you're good at it, the money is there...even in this economy. -Ryan Park http:///www.TheAdventurous5...

Re: 12 Things That Suck About Social Media Consulting

The name of the article is "12 Things That Suck About Social Media Consulting", why would it be positive?

Re: 12 Things That Suck About Social Media Consulting

Great post, bit depressing though ;o) Definitely powering up to get a system up that brings in the money on autopilot - I know it's not easy and requires masses of social and SEO promotion work, but I figure that it's better than having a direct link between tweeting and earning!
Best, Peter
http://www.peterbennett.net

Re: 12 Things That Suck About Social Media Consulting

#2 is so true. I got up to get a drink and ended up on the PC, its's 5AM :s

One things that I learned is that you have to being very specific when discussing your service to a client. For example, as soon as the mention of creating or redesigning their website, I say I don't deal with websites (in a more polite manner, of course!)

In the end I love being a Social Media Consultant!!!

Cheers,
@JustGil

Re: 12 Things That Suck About Social Media Consulting

Great tips, here. The fun part, from my point of view, is the fascinating mish mash of personalities and how they all mix, meld, mold, and mush together (ok, so I over alliterated - shoot me!). The results part - spot on. I am moving into B2B social media and the pressure for results are even more extreme in that arena. Looking forward to the new challenges there and I'll take your advice with me as a bit of a cautionary tale into the future. I got recommended for the job by other people and I am almost 2 weeks in. I decided I would keep my real job and do this on the side as an Independent Contractor. I am not losing the real job or permanent position to chase this. I LOVE the money. It is excellent! I have the connections and presence but I do NOT run my own blog so I have the time to commit to another companies blog. I have found by NOT running my blog companies come to me since I am not about "my brand" I am about THEM! In the past 2 weeks since I started as a Social Media Consultant and others found out I have been given some other assignments also. The money if rolling in....but like I said I am not leaving the real job. I am not a consultant, but I decided to do some research on this topic, because I have a company wanting me to write articles for their website and also help them to develop a social media presence. The thing that really impacted my thinking about it was your statement about the clients needing to be personally involved and active in order to achieve the desired results. I told the owner that the real cost is going to be time (his time), not money, and that he should not expect immediate results but commit to an initial year of solid effort and then see how that has affected his business image and bottom line. I think that was reasonable advise, but as I mentioned, I am not a social media consultant. My advise has simply been that he should develop an online expert image via blogging and social media and then tie that to his website for business. Of course, this will mean I will be doing all of the writing. lol. Do you have any advise for me or source I can go to for determining what I should charge? I will be installing and tweaking and getting a blog ready for him also, but I know what to charge with regard to that. I also know what to charge for each piece of writing, but when you take into account tweets and setting up all the social media accounts and profile writing, plus ongoing efforts to broaden the networking for his business, I am a real loss for what to charge and how much and in what manner-by hour? by project? If you could point me to a good source of information, I would appreciate it. There are so many articles online about social media, and so little time it seems. Thank you.
